Workplace Stress: A Guide for Employers

Employers reduce workplace stress by doing four things well: making it safe to say you are struggling, giving staff a confidential way to check their own mental health, offering a clear route to a psychologist or psychiatrist when needed, and watching team-level trends rather than individuals. NWNT supports each of these with Stressometer screening for employees, care through Dr. Vohra's Emotional Wellness Hub in India, help setting up local services in other countries, and a dashboard of aggregate wellness metrics.

Signs that stress is building in a team

The World Health Organization's ICD-11 describes burnout as an occupational phenomenon: exhaustion, mental distance from one's job and reduced effectiveness, caused by chronic workplace stress that has not been managed. It is a work problem first, which is why employers can do something about it.

  • More short absences, especially around deadlines or on Mondays
  • Longer hours with less to show for them
  • More mistakes, missed handovers and rework
  • Irritability, conflict or silence in meetings that used to be lively
  • Good people quietly withdrawing, or leaving

What managers can do this week

  • Ask "how are you, really?" in one-to-ones, and leave a pause for the answer
  • Look at workload honestly: what can be dropped, delayed or shared
  • Agree norms for messages after hours and on leave, and keep them yourself
  • Make sure everyone knows where to go for confidential help
  • Notice and thank effort, not only results

Screening that staff can trust

Screening only helps if people answer honestly, and they only answer honestly if they believe their manager will not see their responses. The Stressometer gives each employee their own Emotional Wellness Index report. The employer's view is an analytics dashboard built on aggregate wellness metrics, so leaders see how teams, sites or functions are doing without seeing individual answers.

Say this clearly when you launch it. Explain what the organisation will see, what it will not, and what happens next for anyone whose report suggests support.

Turning results into care

The Stressometer places each person on one of three paths: self-care with a detailed report, sessions with a psychologist, or a psychologist and a psychiatrist together. In India, employees reach those professionals through Dr. Vohra's Emotional Wellness Hub, online or in person in New Delhi.

For teams in other countries, psychiatric care has to come from locally licensed practitioners. NWNT helps organisations set up psychology and psychiatry services in their own geography, covering onboarding, practitioner matching and ongoing management. For larger rollouts there is volume licensing, custom API integration with HR and wellness platforms, and a dedicated account manager. Enterprise pricing is shared on request.

Measuring whether it is working

Screen again at regular intervals and compare the aggregate picture over time. Read it alongside data you already hold, such as leave, attrition and engagement. When a team shows rising strain, treat it as a signal about workload, staffing or leadership, not as a judgement on the people in it.

When someone is in crisis at work

If a colleague talks about harming themselves or seems unsafe, stay with them, keep calm and get help. In India call Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 112; elsewhere, the local emergency number. NWNT is not an emergency service, so make sure your managers know these numbers before they need them.
