Relationship Issues: Counselling That Helps

Every relationship goes through strain. It is worth getting help when conflict keeps repeating, when you feel alone with someone beside you, or when tension at home is affecting your sleep, work or health. NWNT's Stressometer has a Domestic Life section that maps pressure at home alongside the rest of your life. A psychologist then works with you alone or with your partner or family, online or in person in Delhi. A psychiatrist joins if depression, anxiety or addiction is part of the picture.

What kinds of relationship issues?

Couples come about repeated fights over money, chores, in-laws or children; about distance after a baby or a move; about a breach of trust. Others come about joint-family tension, a difficult relationship with a parent, or the strain of a marriage where one partner works in another city or country.

Sometimes only one person wants help. That is fine: changing how you respond changes the pattern, even when the other person is not in the room.

How does the Stressometer help?

Domestic Life is one of the Stressometer's five dimensions, so the Emotional Wellness Index shows how much of your stress comes from home and how it interacts with work, life events and your own temperament. Clinical Symptoms flag whether the strain has turned into anxiety or low mood.

Relationship stress without clinical signs usually leads to the second care path, a psychologist. If the report shows symptoms of depression, anxiety or substance use, the third path brings in a psychiatrist as well.

What does relationship counselling look like?

A psychologist helps you understand the cycle you are caught in, how each person's reaction sets off the other's, and practise new ways to talk, listen and repair after an argument. Couples sessions include both partners; individual sessions help one person work on their part. Family sessions can include parents or adult children.

Sessions are available by video, voice or chat, which works well for couples in different cities or countries, or in person at Dr. Vohra's Emotional Wellness Hub in East Patel Nagar, New Delhi.

When does a psychiatrist help?

Relationship trouble and mental health problems often feed each other. If one partner has depression, an anxiety disorder, a drinking problem or another condition, treating it can change the whole relationship. A psychiatrist at the hub can assess and treat this in India, online or in person.

When is it urgent?

Counselling is not the right first step where there is violence or the threat of it. If you or your children are unsafe, call 112 in India or your local emergency number abroad. For a mental health crisis, including thoughts of self-harm after a break-up or a betrayal, call Tele-MANAS on 14416, free and open 24x7.

Frequently asked questions

What if my partner will not come to sessions?
You can start on your own. Individual sessions help you understand the pattern and change your side of it, which often shifts the relationship. Your partner can join later if they choose.
Can partners in different countries have sessions together?
Yes. Online sessions can bring together partners in different cities or countries, as long as each has a private space and a steady connection. Online counselling is offered where local rules allow.
