How does exam stress show up?
Board exams, entrance tests and university finals carry enormous weight in Indian families. Students feel it as a racing mind at night, a stomach that will not settle on exam mornings, or a strange blankness when they turn over the question paper. Some study for hours without retaining anything; others avoid their books entirely because starting feels unbearable.
Parents may notice irritability, tears, a change in appetite, or a child who stops seeing friends. These are signals to talk, not to push harder.
How does the student Stressometer help?
The student version of the Stressometer is built for ages 13 and above. It looks at study pressure alongside family life, temperament and clinical symptoms, so a student, parent or school counsellor can see what is really driving the stress.
If stress is within a healthy range, the report offers study and self-care tips: the first care path. If it is interfering with daily life, the second path connects the student with a psychologist. If the screen picks up signs of an anxiety disorder or depression, the third path adds a psychiatrist.
What does a psychologist do for exam stress?
Sessions are short and practical: building a realistic revision plan, learning to calm the body before and during exams, catching all-or-nothing thoughts (if I fail this, my life is over), and protecting sleep. Parents may join a session to agree on how to support without adding pressure.
Students can meet psychologists from Dr. Vohra's Emotional Wellness Hub online, which suits busy coaching schedules, or in person at East Patel Nagar, a short walk from Patel Nagar metro on the Blue Line.
Programmes for schools and colleges
NWNT's student wellness programme brings the Stressometer to schools, colleges and universities, with aggregate insights for the institution and a clear route to care for students who need it. It fits exam seasons, entrance coaching and the first year away from home.
When is exam stress urgent?
Results season carries real risk. If a student talks about not wanting to live, says goodbye in unusual ways, or seems suddenly calm after a period of despair, act the same day. In India, call Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24x7) or 112. Outside India, call your local emergency number.
Frequently asked questions
- Should a parent book on behalf of a teenager?
- A parent can start the process, but the student should be part of the decision. Students aged 13 and up can take the student Stressometer, and talking it over together first makes the sessions that follow more useful.
- Is exam stress a mental illness?
- No. Exam stress is a reaction to pressure, not a diagnosis. It matters because, when it is intense and long-lasting, it can lead to an anxiety disorder or depression, which is why screening early helps.
